1. QXPW4: Printing Rotated Graphics to PCL Printer

When printing from QuarkXPress 4.0x for Windows to a PCL printer (i.e., a non-PostScript device), rotated graphics print at screen resolution and color bit-depth.

Explanation: Rotated graphics have to be drawn as an offscreen bitmap, both for screen display and PCL printing. Using only the screen resolution of the graphic keeps the size of the offscreen bitmap small, meaning QuarkXPress uses less memory and time to print such images.

If you need to obtain high resolution output of your graphics to a non-PostScript device, there is a "cookie" that can be added to QuarkXPress 4.04, to circumvent this limitation. A "cookie" is a string of code which modifies the base application.

To enter this "cookie," follow these steps:

  1. Open the QuarkXPress Environment window (hold down the Ctrl key while
accessing the Help menu - About QuarkXPress).

  2. Hold down the Ctrl+Alt+Shift keys and click on the 'Create Reg Disk'
button. This will open a dialog with two fields, Keyword and Value.

  3. If you're using QuarkXPress 4.04, enter 76432549 as the Keyword (if
    you're using QuarkXPress Japanese 4.05, enter 76432548).

  4. Enter 1 into the Value field. (The value 1 enables the feature, the
    value 0 disables it.)

After entering this cookie, QuarkXPress for Windows will print rotated images at their full resolution. However, it could cause printing to behave more slowly.

Note:
The "cookie" is written to the XPress Preferences file. If you delete this file, you'll need to re-enter the "cookie."

Be very careful not to enter the wrong code string. If you do, it could damage the application. If this should happen, simply delete the XPress Preferences file and allow the application to build a new one the next time you launch QuarkXPress.

2. QXPM : Apple Posts New ATI Drivers for Blue G3s

In the previous issue of TechNews, we described a problem with crashing while scrolling on a blue & white PowerMacintosh G3 with the ATI drivers loaded. Apple has since released the updated ATI drivers they were testing at the time of our previous issue's writing.

The updated drivers can be downloaded from Apple's Software Library at:

All indications are that these new drivers solve the problem.

4. QXPW4: Tips'n'Tricks: Special Characters on Windows OS

--Mark Davis

Inserting a bullet in a QuarkXPress document: Alt+Shift+8 will insert a standard bullet in QuarkXPress. This is a special keystroke combination built into QuarkXPress, and not available in other Windows applications.

To create an indented bullet list, select a paragraph and go to Style - Formats - Paragraph, and specify a positive (e.g. 5p) Left Indent and a negative (e.g. -5p) First Line Indent. This formats your paragraph so the bulleted lines are indented to the right of the bullet (following the first line of the paragraph). You may wish to add a tabstop at the same indention. Then typing a tab after the bullet before the text will cause the text in the first line to align with the subsequent lines.

Some fonts, like Zapf Dingbats or Wingdings, have an assortment of characters specifically designed for use as bullets. These characters can be accessed using the Windows Character Map. (See below.)

Additional built-in keyboard commands for inserting special characters in your QuarkXPress document include:

Registered AE Alt + Shift + r
Copyright (c) Alt + Shift + c
Section b Alt + Shift + 6
Paragraph x Alt + Shift + 7
Bullet * Alt + Shift + 8
Open double quote " Alt + Shift + [
Close double quote " Alt + Shift + ]
Open single quote ' Alt + [
Close single quote ' Alt + ]

Inserting characters from the Windows Character Map:

Windows includes a utility called Character Map (charmap.exe). You can launch it by going to Start - Run, type in charmap and hit Return. If you don't have charmap.exe you will need to install it by going to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - Windows Setup. Click on Accessories, then Details, and select Character Map. (You will need your Windows 95/98/NT CD).

Once Character Map is installed and launched, you will see a grid display of all of the characters in a given font. Just choose the font you will be working in, e.g. Arial, then select the character you need by clicking on it. This character can then be copied to the Windows Clipboard and pasted in to the text of your QuarkXPress document. Also, the ANSI value for each character is shown in the lower right of the Character Map window. You can type the special character directly into text by holding down the Alt key and typing in the number using the numeric keypad (remember to have the Num Lock button on and to enter the 0 which is part of the number). This function is available in most Windows applications.
