1. QIM15: QuarkImmedia 1.5 Released!
QuarkImmedia 1.5 delivers customers' most requested features
October 15, 1998 -- DENVER -- Quark Inc. today announced the release of version 1.5 of its interactive multimedia software, QuarkImmedia, with a new
suggested retail price of $395 and value-priced upgrades of $129.
"Version 1.5 is designed to meet our customers' demand for a more flexible multimedia authoring tool," said Glen Turpin, QuarkImmedia product manager.
"We're launching version 1.5 with an aggressive pricing and marketing campaign. We believe that our new price point will position QuarkImmedia as
the product that delivers the best price performance in this segment."
Initially released in September 1996, QuarkImmedia lets designers, producers, and creative people apply their skills and talents to publishing
for the screen. Building on the design power and precision of QuarkXPress, QuarkImmedia lets users design interactive communication that incorporates
dynamic media, such as sound, video, animation, and hypertext, and deliver it in multiple ways -- CD-ROM, disk, kiosk, and as CD/Web hybrid
applications -- in addition to traditional print methods.
New upgrade features
QuarkImmedia 1.5 includes a wide variety of new features. Expanded color-handling lets users specify thousands or millions of colors per
project. Designers can easily specify opacity and drop shadows for many types of objects. Variables, functions, and expressions expand the action
set already included in the application, giving QuarkImmedia 1.5 many of the features of a full-fledged programming language. By combining expressions
with scripts and conditionals, designers can make projects truly interactive -- for example, creating projects that perform complex mathematical
calculations to automatically total and submit the order for an online invoice. With support for expressions, designers can precisely control a
project and give each end user a unique experience by responding to his or her actions.
Using QuarkXPress and QuarkImmedia, designers can rapidly adapt concepts from print to multimedia and create a complete product -- from multimedia
content to packaging -- using a single tool. For Jim Mooring, manager of creative services at Deloitte & Touche LLP in Southern California/Nevada,
"The ability to use the familiar QuarkXPress interface to design both printed materials and multimedia applications that complement each other is
what makes the combination of QuarkXPress and QuarkImmedia so compelling. Our in-house creative group is composed of designers, not programmers, which
is why we were attracted to QuarkImmedia in the first place. It lets us focus on what we're best at: communicating."
QuarkImmedia Viewer 1.5 for Windows supports Microsoft's 32-bit API (Application Programming Interface), thus becoming a native Windows 95 and
Windows NT 4.0 application. Its advantages include smoother-running graphic-intensive operations, more optimized interaction with other native
software, color cursors, and a familiar interface, to name a few.
