1. QXPM: Known Issues Between Mac OS 8.5 and QuarkXPress

We have discovered a few problems, most of them minor, between QuarkXPress or QuarkXPress Passport(tm) and the new Mac OS 8.5. Here is a list of the problems Quark(tm) has discovered during testing.

  1. When you select a page or range of pages in the Document Layout palette, the page icons do not highlight, even though the pages are selected. However, if you're selecting a single page, you can still tell which page is selected because it is listed at the bottom of the palette.

  2. The keyboard shortcuts for switching between tools in the QuarkXPress toolbar, and the keyboard shortcuts for switching between applications in the Mac OS 8.5 Application ID (also called Program Switcher) are the same. In QuarkXPress (ever since version 3.2), you can use Command-tab to move the current tool selection down through the toolbox, and Command-Shift-tab to move the current tool selection up through the toolbox.

To prevent this conflict, you can use the Apple Help System in OS 8.5 to change the keyboard shortcuts for the Program Switcher. You can change the Mac OS combination by selecting Help in the Finder, then going to 'Files and programs' -> 'Switching between open programs.' Scroll down to "Help me modify the keyboard shortcuts"; this will run an AppleScript which prompts you to select a modifier key to use and then to select the primary keystroke for the command.

  3. If you have any third-party XTensions(tm) software from "a lowly apprentice production, inc." (ALAP) installed, many QuarkXPress dialog boxes will fail to display text. You can resolve this problem by downloading the ALAP OS 8.5 Updater (v1.0.1) from their Web site <"http://www.alap.com/>.

  4. QuarkXPress 3.3x or QuarkXPress Passport 3.3x will crash when you attempt to go to the Edit Trap dialog box. This is not a problem in QuarkXPress 4.0 or later.

With the exception of the last issue, all of these issues are cosmetic in nature, and will not cause a loss of features or damage to your documents.

For information on the current status of compatibility between Mac OS 8.5 and other software, please see the VersionTracker Online Web site at <http://www.versiontracker.com/systems/system85.shtml> or the MacinTouch Web page at <http://www.macintouch.com> The MacFixIt Web site <http://www.macfixit.com> has a useful section called "Trouble-shooting Mac OS 8.5," which discusses problems and fixes.
