An even newer version of the PDF Filter XTension has been posted to the Quark Web site at
<http://www.quark.com/files/xtquarkxts_40.html> Both Mac
OS and Windows versions are available.
This newer filter, which is version 1.2 Beta 1, corrects the conflict between PDF Filter 1.1 and the Quark CMS on Windows machines, as reported in
the previous edition of TechNews.
Please read the ReadMe file accompanying this XTension for full details on known issues, limitations, compatibility issues, and problems resolved in
this beta version.

Scrolling through a document in QuarkXPress 4.0x on a blue & white G3 with the ATI system extensions loaded can cause the system to crash. It can occur
either when scrolling with the scroll-bar or buttons, or when using the "grabber-hand" tool to shove the page around on the screen. Several users on
Apple's web discussion forums report that there are crash problems in other applications as well, with ATI enabled.
According to our tests, the crash is most likely to occur when the monitor resolution is set to 1600x1200 (which means the monitor size is 19" or
larger) and the color-depth is set to Millions. However, some users have reported the problem at smaller monitor sizes or and resolutions higher than
1024x768.
This problem does not occur for everyone running QuarkXPress 4.0x on a blue & white G3 with the ATI system extensions loaded. Many people are running
this combination without trouble. However, if you do encounter the problem, we've devised the following workarounds:
Workarounds:
Set the monitor color to Thousands; or
If you must work in Millions, set the monitor resolution to 1024x768 or lower; or
Disable the ATI system extensions. Scrolling, however, will be very slow.
This problem has been reported to Apple. They are currently developing and beta-testing updated ATI drivers and will post them on their web site when available. Some of the beta users have reported that the beta drivers seem to eliminate the problems.

Courier substitution of Type 1 fonts when printing to a PostScript printer is a common Windows printing problem. It is typically resolved by removing
and reinstalling Type 1 fonts through Adobe Type Manager (ATM), making sure that the font files are placed into the default font folders as specified by
ATM (i.e., C:\Psfonts and C:\Psfonts\PFM).
If Courier substitution persists:
Make sure fonts reside in the active fonts folder (ATM Deluxe).
Make sure that duplicate instances of a font (i.e., both TrueType and
Type 1 versions of the same font) are not installed on the system. If you
do have duplicates, remove one of them.
Check to see if your WIN.INI file exceeds 50K. If it does, see the
tech*note below for instructions on how to reduce its size.
For additional information regarding Courier substitution, check out the tech*note 010110, entitled "Font Substitution in Printed Output". It is
available on the Quark Web site at <http://www.quark.com/tech/technotes/tn110.html> or via email to
<TechInfo@techlist.quark.com> with the word "index" in the subject line.
Adobe also provides documentation regarding this issue in their "Technical Solutions Database". For information on Courier substitution when using ATM
4.0, check out the document entitled "Type 1 Font Installed in ATM 4.0 Does Not Print to PostScript Printer" at
<http://www.adobe.com/supportservice/custsupport/SOLUTIONS/4582.htm>
If you're using ATM 3.0x, check out the document entitled "Type 1 Font Installed in ATM 3.0x Does Not Print to PostScript Printer" at
<http://www.adobe.com/supportservice/custsupport/SOLUTIONS/4d96.htm>
If you're tired of looking at Helvetica [or Arial] every time you start typing in a fresh new text box, you can change the default font. Just change the font for the "Normal" style sheet while no documents are open. Go to the Edit menu -> Style Sheets, and select the character style sheet named "Normal." Then you can change the font used in this style sheet to whatever font you prefer or work with the most.
