1. QXPM4: Problem with Type Reunion 2.5 and QuarkXPress 4.0x

--Roger Spendlove

A problem has been discovered between QuarkXPress 4.0x and Adobe Type Reunion 2.5. Fonts listed in QuarkXPress pop-up menus (e.g., in the Measurements palette, or the Replace Fonts dialog box from the Usage dialog, etc.) cannot be grouped into families by ATR 2.5. Only font pop-up menus are affected -- the normal Fonts submenu of the Style menu allows Type Reunion grouping.

In the regular font menu listing, QuarkXPress calls for fonts with the standard font name method. However within pop-up menus, QuarkXPress 4.0x calls for fonts by their ID number, rather than by name. This was done to circumvent a problem in Type Reunion 2.0. When Adobe upgraded Type Reunion to version 2.0.3, they fixed the problem QuarkXPress was circumventing. Later, in the update to version 2.5, Adobe also changed ATR to recognize only font menus. Since Quark 4.0x uses font ID numbers rather than font names in its pop-up menus, ATR ignores them.

This problem has been reported to Quark's R&D department, and they are working on a fix.

Adobe is also aware of this issue, and has posted a Technical Solutions document about it at <http://www.adobe.com/supportservice/custsupport/SOLUTIONS/1ac42.htm>  An Adobe technician has told us that Adobe is also working on a fix.

4. QXP  : Tips'n'Tricks: Get Picture Modifications

--Mike Ditto

In the Get Picture dialog box, certain command key combinations, if held when clicking Open, change the nature of the imported picture. Mac OS keys are given in (parentheses), Windows keys are given in [brackets].

(Shift)[Shift] - causes the screen preview of imported TIFFs to be generated at 36 dpi rather than the standard 72 dpi. This allows the document to be somewhat smaller. The high-resolution data in the original TIFF file is left unchanged, and that is what's used when outputting to a PostScript printer.

(Command)[Ctrl] - when applied to high-resolution color bitmaps (TIFFs, etc), imports them as grayscale instead of color. This can cause a significant reduction in filesize, memory needed to handle the page, rendering time and printing time.

(Command)[Ctrl] - when applied to high-resolution grayscale bitmaps (TIFFs, etc), imports as black & white, using 50% luminance as the threshold. Again, this can cause a reduction in filesize, memory and printing time.

(Command)[Ctrl]  (*This keyboard shortcut tip has been updated from a Quark bulletin published 7-26-99)
- when applied to EPS images, causes spot colors in the EPS not to be appended to the QuarkXPress color list. If the colors are not defined in the QuarkXPress colors palette -- and defined there as spot colors -- they will be rendered in their CMYK equivalents when printing color separations. The benefit of importing an EPS with the (Command)[Ctrl] key held down is for when you do not want any spot colors in your printing job; this modifier forces the colors in the EPS to be rendered in as process separations.
