In this issue:
When a QuarkXPress 4.0x for Windows document is saved and re-opened, the position of the document pages will sometimes shift relative to the ruler origin. QuarkTech continues to investigate this problem, but we have not yet identified its cause. So far, neither we, nor any user reporting this problem has been able to duplicate it at will. It remains random and unpredictable.
Some users report that turning off Auto Save or Auto Backup (if they are on) has helped to alleviate this problem. Also, some users experience these shifting pages more often with documents containing items on the pasteboard, while others report that low system resources may be a factor. In the search for a permanent solution to this problem, Quark Technical Support is currently gathering information from users with documents exhibiting shifting pages. If you can consistently reproduce this problem on your system with a new or "unshifted" document, please include a set of specific steps that will cause the pages to shift in an email to TechNews@quark.com Please add the words "Shifting Pages" to the subject line of the email. Thank you.
Below is a list of the current possible workarounds for this problem. The Thumbnail Drag workaround seems to be a short-term solution for most users with "shifting page" documents.
Thumbnail Drag the pages to a new document (the steps for this procedure are listed below).
Copy the elements to a new page.
Size and resize the affected page. Go to File -> Document Setup, and select a larger page size. This will place the elements near the center of the page. Then select all the page elements, move them to the upper left corner of the document (within the margins), then go back to File ->
Document Setup, and choose the original page size.
THUMBNAIL DRAG: If it's just this one document causing a problem, you may want to drag the pages into a new document, save it with a new name, and see if that takes care of the problem. To do this, just open the 'problem' document and place it in Thumbnails view. Then create a new document the same size as the 'problem' document, and place it in Thumbnails view. Go to Window menu -> Tile Vertically. This places the two documents side by side in Thumbnails view.
Select the pages of the 'problem' document and drag them over to the new document. dropping them just below the blank first page of the new document. Close the 'problem' document. Save the new document using the same name as the 'problem' document. You can delete the blank first page. This procedure is called a Thumbnail Drag; for more thorough information about it, please see our tech*note 010023 "Dragging Pages Between Documents in Thumbnails View." Apple has released Font Manager Update 1.0, which fixes problems in the Mac OS 8.6 Font Manager that have plagued several applications, including QuarkXPress. Corrupt FOND resources, under certain circumstances, could result from the Font Manager creating a corrupt resource inside some applications or fonts. This caused some third party font management tools to be unable to move fonts, and also caused some crashes. The update will not correct or remove any previously corrupted resources. To repair damaged files on your computer, or on disks connected to your computer, you must use the Font First Aid utility, which is included with the downloaded Update package. Also, in Mac OS 8.6, the height of characters in Apple's Japanese and Traditional Chinese fonts is one pixel shorter than in Mac OS 8.5, leading to problems displaying, editing, or printing text. The Update also corrects this problem.
Although this is not a Quark product or fix, we're mentioning it here in Quark TechNews because it is the solution to a problem many of our customers have experienced and asked QuarkTech about.
The Font Manager Update 1.0 can be downloaded from Apple's Web site at: http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n11489 Please read the ReadMe file, as it contains some extremely important instructions from Apple on how to implement the Updater and the Font First Aid utility.
Some users have reported a slowdown in the computer's responsiveness to user actions within many applications (including but not exclusively QuarkXPress) after installing the Font Manager Update. QuarkTech has not been able to reproduce this problem, but it has been discussed, including a potential solution, on the MacFixIt web site at:
http://www.macfixit.com/archives/august.99.a.shtml#font-08-02
Apparently, Zapping the PRAM solves this slowdown in most, if not all cases.
In addition to Picture Boxes and Text Boxes, QuarkXPress 4.0x adds a new
kind of box: Content of None (sometimes called a "Graphic" box, because it
is used as a graphic element. Such boxes are meant to contain a simple color
or a blend, or to possess a frame; but they do not actually contain any
content like pictures or text. They can be rectangular, circular, Bezier or
freehand boxes of any shape. To create such a box, simply draw a box or
shape with any Text Box tool or Picture Box tool, and then access the Item
menu -> Content and select "None."
However, here's a trick to add tools for drawing Content of None boxes to
your toolbar.
Go to Edit menu -> Preferences -> Document and select the Tool tab (or use the shortcut of double-clicking on any tool in the palette).
While holding down the Command key [Ctrl in Windows], click on the 'Default Tool Palette' button.
Click OK to close the preferences window, then look at the Tool palette. A new empty-box tool appears beneath the other box tools. You can drag the sub-tools for other Content of None shapes (e.g., rounded-corner box, freehand shaped box, Bezier box, etc.) onto the Tools palette the same way you can for the other tools (hold down Command [Ctrl] while selecting the sub-tool).
In a previous issue, we described a problem between QuarkXPress 4.0x for Mac OS and Adobe Type Reunion 2.5, whereby the fonts in the Measurements Palette's font popup menu could not be 'reunited' into families by ATR 2.5. Adobe just released an updater for Type Reunion which fixes this problem, among others. It can be downloaded from the Adobe web site at: http://www.adobe.com/supportservice/custsupport/LIBRARY/5a36.htm
Incidentally, Adobe has also released an Updater for Adobe Type Manager (ATM) Deluxe 4.5 which is reported to correct the problem that causes text styled with the Small Caps attribute to display incorrectly. This update can be found at:
